What QuikTrip has said
QuikTrip hasn't published a policy or statement on hiring people with criminal records, and it isn't on the Second Chance Business Coalition member list. Its store, warehouse and delivery driver job postings don't mention background checks or drug tests. Postings for protective services (armed security) specialists list a pre-employment criminal history background check going back to age 18 or seven years, whichever is shorter, along with a pre-employment financial background check, a driving record screen, pre-employment and annual drug screens and a personality test. Delivery driver postings say fuel drivers must also pass a TSA background check.
We didn't find a public statement from QuikTrip about hiring people with records: not on its careers site, in its reports, or in its announcements. That doesn't mean it won't hire you. It means there's nothing on the record to point to.
Does QuikTrip do background checks?
QuikTrip runs background checks for some roles. Protective services (armed security) postings, which we read in Arizona, Iowa, North Carolina and Kansas, say applicants must submit to a pre-employment criminal history background check covering the period since age 18 or the last seven years, whichever is shorter, a pre-employment financial background check, a Department of Motor Vehicles screen and a pre-employment personality inventory (MMPI), and that the background check, drug screen and driving record check are repeated every year. They say 'pre-employment' without saying whether that comes before or after an offer. Store clerk, assistant manager and driver assistant postings we read don't mention a background check. QuikTrip delivery driver postings say fuel drivers must pass a TSA background check. QuikTrip names no screening company.1,2,3
Does QuikTrip drug test?
QuikTrip drug tests for some roles. Protective services postings (Tucson, AZ among others) say applicants must submit to a pre-employment and annual 10-panel drug screen, plus annual or random screens as management decides. The store, warehouse and driver postings we read don't mention a drug test, and QuikTrip hasn't published a company-wide pre-employment policy. Delivery drivers also fall under federal rules (see role notes).1
Rules for specific jobs
- Protective services (security) specialists
Postings for this role (we read ones in Arizona, North Carolina, Iowa and Kansas) require age 21, armed security officer certification and several years of police, armed security or military police experience. They list a pre-employment medical exam, physical aptitude test and personality inventory (MMPI); a pre-employment criminal history background check back to age 18 or seven years, whichever is shorter; a pre-employment financial background check; a driving record screen; and pre-employment, annual and random drug screens. The background check, drug screen, driving record check, weapon qualification and TASER recertification are repeated every year.1
- Store delivery drivers (tractor-trailer, QT Distribution) and fuel delivery drivers
Delivery driver postings (we read ones in Denver, Chicago area, St. Louis area and Abilene) require a high school diploma, completion of QuikTrip's driver training program, age 21 or older and a clean driving record with no DWI/DUI in the past 5 years, plus meeting DOT requirements. They say fuel drivers must also pass a TSA background check and get hazardous material and tanker endorsements. QuikTrip's distribution page says it provides and pays for CDL training.3
- Commercial drivers in DOT-regulated jobs (federal rule)
(federal rule) A negative pre-employment drug test is required before a CDL driver first performs safety-sensitive work for an employer.4
- Driver assistants
Driver assistant postings (Phoenix, AZ; Chicago area, IL; Charlotte, NC) ask for a high school diploma or GED and the ability to get a machine operator certificate. They don't mention a background check or drug test.5
Your rights, and how far back a check can go
- Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.13,14,15
- Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."13,14
- You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.13,16
- The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.17,18
- Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).17,19
Before you apply
- You can ask a background screening company for the information it has on you, and the CFPB keeps a list of consumer reporting companies, including employment screening companies, with their contact details.13,16,20
- According to the Clean Slate Initiative, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate laws that meet its criteria for automatically clearing eligible records: Pennsylvania, Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Missouri, plus D.C.21
- The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.22,23
