Information, not legal advice

Second Chance Index explains, in general terms, what laws, courts, agencies, employers and banks publish, with a link to each source and the date we checked it. It is not legal, financial or employment advice, and it isn't a substitute for advice from a lawyer who knows the facts of your situation. We aren't a law firm, nobody here is acting as your lawyer, and using the site, its tools or our email address doesn't create a lawyer-client or any other professional relationship. Don't send us confidential details about your case.

Laws, court rules, fees and company policies change, differ by location, role and the details of a case, and we can make mistakes. Legal deadlines can be strict. Before you rely on anything here, confirm it with a lawyer, a legal aid office, the court, the agency, the employer or the bank. Free and low-cost legal help is often available through legal aid organizations and court self-help centers.

Our tools

Tools such as the record-clearing checker and the background check explainer show general rules based only on the choices you make. They don't know the details of your record, they don't decide whether you qualify for anything, and their results aren't a legal opinion or a prediction of what a court, agency or employer will do. Your choices stay in your browser and aren't sent to us.

Not a consumer reporting agency

We don't prepare or sell reports about individuals, and we aren't a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You may not use the site or its content to decide any person's eligibility for employment, credit, insurance, housing or any other purpose covered by that law.

Companies and links

Company names and trademarks belong to their owners and are used only to identify them. A listing doesn't mean a company endorses us or that we endorse it. Links lead to other sites with their own terms, which we don't control and aren't responsible for. Some links may earn us a commission, as our disclosures explain.

Our content and acceptable use

You may quote, link to and embed our pages with credit to Second Chance Index, including through our free embeds. Please don't copy the index in bulk, republish large parts of it, or present it as your own without asking. Don't use the site in a way that breaks the law, interferes with how it runs, or gathers it with automated tools at a rate that burdens it.

No warranty

The site, its content and its tools are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise the site will be uninterrupted or error-free.

Limits of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, AI Laws By State LLC and its owners, contractors and partners won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any lost wages, job opportunities, fees, profits or data, arising from your use of the site or your reliance on its content or tools, even if we were told such damages were possible. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to one hundred U.S. dollars ($100). Some places don't allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

Your responsibility

You're responsible for how you use the site. To the extent the law allows, you agree to cover AI Laws By State LLCfor claims, losses and reasonable legal fees that result from your misuse of the site or your breach of these terms.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you have a concern, please email us first so we can try to resolve it informally within 30 days. Any dispute that isn't resolved that way will be heard only in the state or federal courts located in Wyoming, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. To the extent the law allows, any claim relating to the site must be brought within one year after it arose.

General

These terms, our privacy policy and our editorial standards are the whole agreement between you and us about the site. If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term isn't a waiver of it.

Changes and contact
