Does Menards hire people with felonies?

No published policy

Unclear.

Menards hasn't published a policy on hiring people with criminal records.

What Menards has said

We found no Menards statement on hiring people with criminal records, and Menards is not a Second Chance Business Coalition member. Its careers pages and the roughly 860 postings in its job listings (store, distribution, manufacturing, fleet and office jobs in 15 Midwestern states) don't mention background checks, drug testing or how records are treated, and we found no applicant privacy notice that covers screening.

We didn't find a public statement from Menards about hiring people with records: not on its careers site, in its reports, or in its announcements. That doesn't mean it won't hire you. It means there's nothing on the record to point to.

Does Menards do background checks?

Menards hasn't said publicly whether it runs background checks. None of the Menards careers pages, postings or privacy pages we read says whether Menards runs a background check, when, or what it covers. Its California privacy rights page lists information tied to a job application among the data it collects but doesn't mention background checks or criminal history.1,2,3

Does Menards drug test?

Menards hasn't published a drug testing policy. We found no Menards careers page or posting that says applicants are drug tested. Two Human Resource Coordinator postings (Germantown and Hudson, Wisconsin) list making sure the company's drug-free workplace program is followed among the job's duties, but they don't say what the program involves or whether it includes testing. Federal drug testing rules for CDL drivers are noted separately under role notes.4

Rules for specific jobs

  • Home daily CDL A drivers (fleet)

(federal rule) FMCSA says CDL drivers operating commercial motor vehicles on public roads are generally subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing, and an employer must receive a negative drug test result before the driver operates a commercial vehicle. The Menards CDL posting we read (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) lists DOT compliance, a current DOT medical card and an excellent driving record, and doesn't describe a drug test or a criminal background check.5

  • Store, distribution, manufacturing and office jobs

We read the text of every posting in Menards' career center listing on Oct. 31, 2026 (863 postings in SD, MN, IA, IN, MI, WI, IL, OH, WV, NE, MO, ND, KY, WY and KS). None mentioned background checks, criminal or arrest records, drug testing or fair-chance language; the only drug-related wording was a mention of a drug-free workplace program among an HR coordinator's duties.2

Your rights, and how far back a check can go

  • Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.10,11,12
  • Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."10,11
  • You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.10,13
  • The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.14,15
  • Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).14,16

Your full background check rights

Before you apply

  • You can ask a background screening company for the information it has on you, and the CFPB keeps a list of consumer reporting companies, including employment screening companies, with their contact details.10,13,17
  • According to the Clean Slate Initiative, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate laws that meet its criteria for automatically clearing eligible records: Pennsylvania, Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Missouri, plus D.C.18
  • The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.19,20
