What BJ's Wholesale Club has said

We found no BJ's statement on hiring people with criminal records, and BJ's is not a Second Chance Business Coalition member. Its careers site, its privacy policy and the 80 club, distribution center and office postings we read say nothing about background checks, drug testing or how records are treated, so how BJ's screens applicants is not published.

We didn't find a public statement from BJ's Wholesale Club about hiring people with records: not on its careers site, in its reports, or in its announcements. That doesn't mean it won't hire you. It means there's nothing on the record to point to.

Does BJ's Wholesale Club do background checks?

BJ's Wholesale Club hasn't said publicly whether it runs background checks. None of the BJ's careers pages, postings or its privacy policy that we read says whether BJ's runs a background check, when, or what it covers. The privacy policy says BJ's collects the content of job applications and uses information for candidate screening and evaluation, without mentioning background checks or criminal history.1,2,3

Does BJ's Wholesale Club drug test?

BJ's Wholesale Club hasn't published a drug testing policy. None of the 80 BJ's postings we read mention a drug test, including forklift, lumper and truck-related distribution center jobs.

Rules for specific jobs

  • Club, distribution center and office jobs

We read 80 postings on BJ's Workday job site on Oct. 31, 2026: club jobs in Ohio, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, 20 distribution center and quality control jobs in Maryland, Connecticut, Kentucky, Florida and Massachusetts, and a few office jobs. None mentioned background checks, criminal or arrest records, drug testing or fair-chance language.3

  • Truck drivers

BJ's truck driver applications run through a separate driver application site whose page showed no text we could read, so we can't say what it says about screening or drug testing. We did not confirm which BJ's driver jobs require a CDL.4

Your rights, and how far back a check can go

  • Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.9,10,11
  • Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."9,10
  • You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.9,12
  • The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.13,14
  • Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).13,15

Your full background check rights

Before you apply

  • You can ask a background screening company for the information it has on you, and the CFPB keeps a list of consumer reporting companies, including employment screening companies, with their contact details.9,12,16
  • According to the Clean Slate Initiative, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate laws that meet its criteria for automatically clearing eligible records: Pennsylvania, Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Missouri, plus D.C.17
  • The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.18,19
