Does Meijer hire people with felonies?

No published policy

Unclear.

Meijer hasn't published a policy on hiring people with criminal records.

Meijer's careers site, newsroom and 2024 Corporate Impact Report say nothing about hiring people with records, and the postings we read carry no fair-chance wording. It is not on the Second Chance Business Coalition list or the 2016 White House Fair Chance Business Pledge fact sheets.

What Meijer has said

We found no Meijer statement on hiring people with criminal records, and Meijer is not a Second Chance Business Coalition member. Its careers pages and the store, distribution, manufacturing and pharmacy postings we read say nothing about background checks or criminal records. Meijer keeps its privacy policy for job applicants in an internal privacy center rather than publishing it, though applicants can ask its privacy office for a copy. The two private-fleet truck driver postings we read (Newport and Lansing, Michigan) list a pre-employment drug screen, a DOT physical and limits on recent moving violations.

We didn't find a public statement from Meijer about hiring people with records: not on its careers site, in its reports, or in its announcements. That doesn't mean it won't hire you. It means there's nothing on the record to point to.

Does Meijer do background checks?

Meijer hasn't said publicly whether it runs background checks. We found no Meijer careers page or posting that mentions a background check. Meijer's public privacy policy (last updated August 17, 2026) says data about job applicants is covered by an internal Meijer Enterprise Privacy Policy, which applicants can request from Meijer's privacy office; that policy isn't public.1

Does Meijer drug test?

Meijer drug tests for some roles. Two Meijer truck driver postings (Newport and Lansing, Michigan) list the ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, along with a DOT physical and road test. Federal rules require that test for CDL drivers (see role notes). None of the store, warehouse, manufacturing or pharmacy postings we read mentions a drug test, and Meijer hasn't published a policy for other jobs.2

Rules for specific jobs

  • Meijer private-fleet truck drivers (CDL-A)

Two truck driver postings (Newport and Lansing, Michigan) require drivers to be 21 or older with a CDL-A, a hazmat endorsement or the ability to get one, and a year of driving experience or an accredited CDL program, and to pass a DOT physical, road test and pre-employment drug screen. They also require no moving violations in the last year and no more than two in the last three years.3

  • Commercial drivers in DOT-regulated jobs (federal rule)

Federal rules require a verified negative drug test before a CDL driver first performs safety-sensitive work for an employer.4

  • Store, warehouse and manufacturing jobs

The store postings we read (cashier, stocking, food, fuel center and asset protection jobs in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan) and the warehouse and dairy plant postings (Newport, Michigan; Tipp City, Ohio) don't mention criminal records, background checks or drug tests.5

Your rights, and how far back a check can go

  • Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.12,13,14
  • Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."12,13
  • You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.12,15
  • The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.16,17
  • Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).16,18

Your full background check rights

Before you apply

  • You can ask a background screening company for the information it has on you, and the CFPB keeps a list of consumer reporting companies, including employment screening companies, with their contact details.12,15,19
  • According to the Clean Slate Initiative, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate laws that meet its criteria for automatically clearing eligible records: Pennsylvania, Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Missouri, plus D.C.20
  • The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.21,22
