What H-E-B has said

H-E-B has not published a policy on hiring people with criminal records, and its careers FAQ does not discuss background checks or drug tests. Individual H-E-B job postings we read for drivers, a security role and store leadership roles list a background check, and the driver and security postings also list drug screening. Some driver postings say applicants must have no felony convictions.

We didn't find a public statement from H-E-B about hiring people with records: not on its careers site, in its reports, or in its announcements. That doesn't mean it won't hire you. It means there's nothing on the record to point to.

Does H-E-B do background checks?

H-E-B runs background checks for some roles. H-E-B postings we read list a background check for a CDL driver role (with work-history verification and a driving record check), an Associate Protection Officer role (annual background checks) and an Assistant Meat Market Manager role. H-E-B has not said whether every role is checked or when in the process the check happens.1,2,3

Does H-E-B drug test?

H-E-B drug tests for some roles. One CDL driver posting lists a DOT drug screen, Premium Delivery Driver postings list a drug screen, and one Associate Protection Officer posting lists random drug screens. H-E-B has not published a drug testing policy for other roles.1,2

Rules for specific jobs

  • CDL drivers

One H-E-B CDL driver posting (Temple, TX) requires a DOT physical, a DOT drug screen, a background check, work-history verification and a lifetime driving record from Texas DPS, and says applicants must never have had a DWI/DUI or felony conviction.1

  • Non-CDL delivery and route driver roles

H-E-B's "CDL driver" job-search feed also returns non-CDL delivery roles, and the specific postings it shows change over time. An October 2026 posting for an eFulfillment Center Route Driver (Leander, TX) lists a background screening and a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check at hiring and periodically afterward, requires no DWI/DUI or felony convictions, pays $20.00/hour, and requires a valid U.S. driver's license held 3+ years rather than a CDL; that posting doesn't mention a drug screen. Because these are individual postings on a live job-search feed rather than a published policy, the exact title, pay and screening details can change as postings open and close.4

  • Minimum age

The careers FAQ says the minimum age is 16 for Curbies, Shoppers, Baggers and Checkers, 21 for driver roles and 18 for all other positions.5

Your rights, and how far back a check can go

  • Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.6,7,8
  • Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."6,7
  • You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.6,9
  • The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.10,11
  • Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).10,12

Your full background check rights

Before you apply

  • You can ask a background screening company for the information it has on you, and the CFPB keeps a list of consumer reporting companies, including employment screening companies, with their contact details.6,9,13
  • According to the Clean Slate Initiative, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate laws that meet its criteria for automatically clearing eligible records: Pennsylvania, Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Missouri, plus D.C.14
  • The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.15,16
