Does Albertsons Companies hire people with felonies?

Reviews records case by case

Case by case.

Albertsons Companies's own materials say it considers applicants with criminal records, but it hasn't made a broader public commitment.

Albertsons' own postings, for store, pharmacy, warehouse, driver and corporate jobs and in states with and without fair-chance laws, say qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records will be considered under applicable law, which signals review rather than an automatic bar. We found no broader commitment: no coalition membership, program or company statement in its careers pages or its 2020 to 2025 impact reports.

What Albertsons Companies has said

Albertsons Companies runs more than 20 grocery banners, and its single careers site lists jobs for Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Acme Markets, Shaw's, Star Market, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Pavilions, Carrs, Haggen, Lucky, United Supermarkets, Kings, Balducci's, Andronico's, Amigos, Pak 'n Save and others. Every one of the 178 postings we read there, from 24 states, says the company will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records, consistent with state and local law. Its applicant privacy notice, which also covers Safeway, Vons and other subsidiaries, says the company may collect credit and background check information and, where the law allows, alcohol or drug testing information. Albertsons is not a Second Chance Business Coalition member, and we found no second-chance hiring program.

  • Fair-chance statement in a job posting

All 178 Albertsons Companies postings we read on Oct. 22, 2026 end their equal opportunity statement with a line saying that, consistent with applicable state and local law, the company will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records. We saw it on store postings in 20 states, including Texas, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska and Louisiana, and on driver, warehouse, pharmacy and corporate postings.1

Does Albertsons Companies do background checks?

Albertsons Companies runs background checks. Albertsons Companies' applicant privacy notice, which covers the company and subsidiaries including The Vons Companies, Safeway Inc. and Albertson's LLC, says it may collect or obtain credit and background check information and alcohol or drug testing information where the law permits, and that it verifies applicant information through reference and background checks where permitted. It doesn't say what a background check covers, when it happens or who runs it. The store postings we read don't mention screening.2

Does Albertsons Companies drug test?

Albertsons Companies hasn't published a drug testing policy. The applicant privacy notice lists alcohol or drug testing information, where the law permits, among information Albertsons may collect, but we found no Albertsons page or posting saying which jobs, if any, require a pre-employment drug test. Commercial truck drivers fall under federal DOT testing rules (see role notes).2

Rules for specific jobs

  • Store jobs at Albertsons Companies banners

Albertsons' careers site lists jobs for more than 20 banners in 34 states and DC, including Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Acme Markets, Shaw's, Star Market, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Pavilions, Carrs, Haggen, Lucky, United Supermarkets, Kings, Balducci's and Andronico's. The store postings we read on this site carry the arrest-and-conviction line.3

  • CDL A truck drivers

Albertsons' CDL A driver postings we read require a valid Class A CDL, a safe driving record with a clear motor vehicle record, age 21 or older and two years of tractor-trailer experience, and mention DOT compliance.4

  • Commercial drivers in DOT-regulated jobs (federal rule)

Federal rules require a verified negative drug test before a CDL driver first performs safety-sensitive work for an employer.5

Your rights, and how far back a check can go

  • Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.11,12,13
  • Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."11,12
  • You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.11,14
  • The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.15,16
  • Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).15,17

Your full background check rights

Before you apply

  • You can ask a background screening company for the information it has on you, and the CFPB keeps a list of consumer reporting companies, including employment screening companies, with their contact details.11,14,18
  • According to the Clean Slate Initiative, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate laws that meet its criteria for automatically clearing eligible records: Pennsylvania, Utah, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Virginia, California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Missouri, plus D.C.19
  • The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.20,21
