What Discount Tire has said

Discount Tire hasn't published a policy on hiring people with criminal records, background checks or drug tests that we could find. None of the 15 store, fleet and warehouse postings we opened on its careers site mention a background check, drug test, or arrests and convictions. A notice for California job applicants says Discount Tire may collect information from vendors that provide background checks. Discount Tire is not on the Second Chance Business Coalition member list.

We didn't find a public statement from Discount Tire about hiring people with records: not on its careers site, in its reports, or in its announcements. That doesn't mean it won't hire you. It means there's nothing on the record to point to.

Does Discount Tire do background checks?

Discount Tire hasn't said publicly whether it runs background checks. The only screening wording we found is in Discount Tire's privacy disclosure for California job applicants, employees and contractors (last updated December 30, 2022), which says it may collect personal information from vendors that provide background checks or related information. That notice is written for California residents, so we don't treat it as a nationwide statement that Discount Tire runs checks or what they cover. None of the 15 postings we opened mentions a background check.1,2,3,4,5

Does Discount Tire drug test?

Discount Tire hasn't published a drug testing policy. Discount Tire hasn't published a drug testing policy on the careers pages or in the 15 postings we opened, including a fleet service technician and a warehouse posting.2,3,6,7

Your rights, and how far back a check can go

  • Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), an employer must get your written permission before it gets a background report about you from a background screening company.14,15,16
  • Before an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you because of something in a background report, it must give you a copy of the report and a document called "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act."14,15
  • You have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in your background report directly with the company that made it.14,17
  • The FCRA's seven-year limit does not apply to criminal convictions, so under federal law a conviction can show up on a background report no matter how old it is.18,19
  • Under the FCRA, background and credit reports generally cannot include arrest records, civil lawsuits, or civil judgments that are more than seven years old (or older than the statute of limitations, if that is longer).18,20

  • The Federal Bonding Program, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, lets states give employers free fidelity bonds that protect them against losses from a newly hired worker's dishonest acts, for job seekers with past justice involvement or in recovery from substance use.23,24
