PNC Simple Checking
PNC's account terms say it may pull consumer reports when you apply. Those can include banking-history reports like ChexSystems.
PNC's account agreement says that by opening the account you authorize it to obtain consumer reports from third parties such as consumer reporting agencies, to verify your identity and decide whether you're eligible, and again later to service the account. ChexSystems isn't named in the parts we read; PNC's product page names only Early Warning Services.1

What it is
PNC's low-fee, no-overdraft-fee checking account. The $5 monthly charge is waived with a direct deposit of any amount or if you're under 25 or 62 and older, and it takes $0 to open online ($25 in a branch). PNC openly pitches it as a second chance at banking, but it still reviews Early Warning Services reports and says a negative history may affect eligibility.2,4
PNC says the account can be a fresh start for people looking for a second chance at safe, affordable banking. It adds that applicants must meet standard banking requirements and that a negative banking history may affect eligibility.2
Does PNC use ChexSystems?

Early Warning Services: checks, may still approve. PNC's FAQ says it reviews standard banking history reports, such as Early Warning Services, when opening the account, and that a negative history may affect eligibility. It still positions the account as a second chance. The account agreement also says PNC furnishes information to Early Warning Services and explains how to dispute it.2
Fees and overdraft
- Monthly fee
- $5 a month. Waived for a statement period with a qualifying direct deposit of any amount, when an account holder is under 25 or 62 or older (based on the primary or secondary owner's date of birth), or for PNC employees.2,4
- Minimum to open
- $25
- Overdraft
- Transactions the account can't cover are declined, and PNC charges $0 overdraft and returned-item fees. Some pre-authorized transactions (such as gas station holds) can still overdraw the account, without a fee.
- ATMs
- Fee-free at PNC and partner ATMs (PNC cites about 60,000); $3 per transaction at other ATMs in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands ($5 in other countries), and other banks' surcharges aren't reimbursed.
Who can open it
Opens online with no minimum deposit. PNC announced a 'national introduction' of the account in December 2025 and says opening is available across all PNC channels, but the pages we read don't list eligible states or say whether online applicants must live in PNC's branch markets. The fee schedule notes that products and prices may vary by market.
Deposit insurance: PNC Bank, National Association, Member FDIC
If you've been denied before
- If a bank or credit union turns you down because of a checking account report, it must send you an "adverse action" notice with the name and contact information of the reporting company it used.7,8
- By law, you can get a free copy of your checking account report once every 12 months, and you are also entitled to a free copy if a bank turns you down because of it.9,10
- If your checking account report has an error, you have the right to dispute it with the reporting company and with the bank or credit union that supplied the information. Under the FCRA, companies must investigate disputes free of charge.9,10,11
- The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) says negative information generally stays on ChexSystems and Early Warning Services reports for five years.12
